Telecommuting Among Benefits for a Changing Workplace

As the demographics of the workforce change, so do their needs and wants. Employers who wish to attract and retain today's best employees have been adjusting their benefit offerings accordingly, according to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) 2001 Benefits Survey.

Here are some of the key findings:

• The workforce is busier than ever and is aging -- consequently, employers are offering more flexible benefits as well as benefits geared toward an aging worker population.
  
• The number of organizations offering flextime grew from 46% to 58% since 1997.
  
• Telecommuting is available now from 37% of organizations, compared with 20% five years ago.

Becoming More Family Friendly

Family-friendly benefits are among the more popular and sought after benefits today, as employers are trying to help employees balance the demands of work and home life, and telecommuting figures prominently among these benefits, as do job sharing and compressed work weeks.
