Work Trends: America's Attitudes About Work,
Employers, and Government A survey of 1,000 adult workers across the US conducted in March, 1999 by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University and the Center for Survey Research and Analysis at University of Connecticut. Among the findings:
- 46% of all workers say the opportunity to telecommute is important to a job, but only 17% of employers offer telecommuting opportunities
- 8% of all workers telecommute, but 59% indicated they would telecommute if given the chance
- 46% of those who do telecommute report they are more productive
- 90% of telecommuters say the opportunity to telecommute helps them balance work and family
- Those with higher incomes and education levels are much more likely to have the opportunity to telecommute
