Canadians and Telecommuting: Survey of 3,500
Canadian employees conducted by Ekos Research Associates Inc.(November, 1998). Among the findings:
Of Canadian employees want to telecommute:
- 50% feel their at least part of their jobs could be done remotely
- 29% expect to telecommute next year with 63% expecting to telecommute at some point
- 43% would quit their jobs if another employer offered them an equivalent job allowing telecommuting
- 33% would choose telecommuting over a 10% raise
- 77% believe that new technology facilitates working at home
- The positive impacts of telecommuting (finances, family life, time pressures, working hours) far outweigh the negative impacts
- Most telecommuting is not full-time, occurring only part of the week at home. This helps address issues such as 'staying in the loop', isolation, loneliness, and 'out of sight, out of mind'. Working in both locations also helps acclimate telecommuters, tele-managers and office-bound colleagues to the "art" of telecommuting
