Jim Ryan - Mgr, Workplace Strategy and Major Projects - Corporate Real Estate

Telecommute Connecticut has been a critical member of our team as we developed our Agile Work Pilot Program; providing us with needed insight from their broad experience to help us avoid the pitfalls and risks of this type of change. After helping to shape our communications, technology and human resources tools, they supported our pilot kick-off by providing additional technology resources and facilitating the training sessions. We might have gotten here without them, but we would not be nearly as successful had we not had their support.

Workforce Effectiveness
At Pitney Bowes we need more employees to telecommute, work remotely and work closer to their homes, so that we can help folks get to and from work more quickly and efficiently, and frankly make our workforce more effective. Studies have shown that telecommuting results in increased productivity, reduced stress, and greater employee satisfaction.

A Key for Business Continuity
Telecommuting certainly can be one of the most successful flexible work arrangements. Certainly when there're situations like when there's snow storms, hurricanes, or any kind of situation that is unpredictable. Employees that are telecommuting will be connected. Employees that are telecommuting will have the ability to work where other folks might be stuck in traffic or, frankly, never get to work those days. To me it makes good business sense to have folks that are connected and that are able to support both the business and the customers, no matter what the weather or traffic conditions are.

Reduces Traffic
If just half of the folks that drive alone to work telecommuted one day a week the result would be a 10 percent reduction in single-occupancy vehicles on our roads, they'd save time and money, and reduce the strain on our infrastructure.

Telecommuters Make It Work
Folks that telecommute have a vested interest in making the telecommuting arrangement work. There have been a lot of studies that have shown increases in productivity around telecommuting. To my knowledge there has never been a study that has shown a decrease. Employees want to telecommute so they're going to see that it works.

Telecommuters Are Accessible
One of the things that there's always been some concern about is what if we need to get a hold of someone, what if we need to have somebody come into a meeting. Frankly, sometimes it's easier to find folks if they are working remotely and you know where they are versus being in a large facility they may be off at a meeting or out of touch with their department.
